About Christmas

Christmas in Kerala is a spectacular celebration, owing to the state's large Christian population (around 18% of Kerala identifies as Christian). Kerala Christians — St. Thomas Christians, Latin Catholics, Knanaya Catholics, and others — have a 2,000-year history tracing their faith to the Apostle Thomas who is believed to have arrived in Kerala in 52 CE. Kerala Christmas blends universal traditions with unique local customs: giant illuminated stars (Tharaka), midnight Mass at ornate churches, Christmas cribs (nativity scenes), and carol singing groups that visit homes.

Traditions & Rituals

Tharaka (Star Lanterns)

താരക

Giant illuminated stars hung outside homes and public spaces throughout December. A uniquely Kerala Christmas tradition — the night before Christmas, entire villages glow with thousands of these paper or plastic stars. The sight of a Kerala town lit up with Tharaka at night is breathtaking.

Midnight Mass

അർദ്ധരാത്രി കുർബ്ബാന

Christmas Eve Midnight Mass (Perunnal Kurvana) is the centrepiece of Kerala Christmas. Churches are packed to capacity. Many of Kerala's ancient churches — some dating back 400+ years — are beautifully illuminated for this occasion.

Christmas Crib

ക്രിബ്

Elaborate nativity scenes (cribs) displayed in homes, churches, and public squares. Kerala cribs often incorporate local landscapes — paddy fields, coconut palms, and backwaters — into the traditional Bethlehem scene.

Carol Singing

കരോൾ ഗാനം

Groups of carol singers visit homes throughout December, singing traditional Malayalam Christmas carols (Christu Keerthanam). Homeowners offer sweets, gifts, or cash to the carol groups.
